China Angry About Nuclear Submarine, Australian PM Responds Lightly

Jakarta

Apart from France, the government China has also expressed his anger following the signing of a new defense alliance agreement between Australia, USA and UK. China’s anger is mainly over Australia’s decision to build a fleet nuclear powered submarine with US and UK assistance.

The Chinese government has described the alliance as a “grossly irresponsible” threat to regional stability. China also questions commitment Australia against nuclear non-proliferation and warned Western allies that they risked “shooting themselves in the foot”.

As reported by the news agency AFP, Friday (17/9/2021), the Chinese statement was taken lightly by Australian Prime Minister (PM) Scott Morrison. In an interview with radio station 2GB, Friday (17/9), Morrison said China have a “development program” nuclear submarine very substantive.”

“They have the right to make decisions in their national interest for their defense arrangements, and of course so do Australia and all other countries,” Morrison said.

Earlier, US President Joe Biden announced a defense alliance Australia-US-UK on Wednesday (15/9) local time, expanded US nuclear submarine technology to Australia and cyber defense, applied artificial intelligence, and underwater capabilities.

In a series of media interviews, Morrison said his government is reacting to the changing dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region where territory is increasingly contested and competition is increasing.

In an interview with Channel Seven television, Morrison said Australia was “well aware” of China’s nuclear submarine capabilities and growing military investment.
