The Scottish Government has asked the Ministry of Defense to provide assistance to the Ambulance Service. A similar call was made in Northern Ireland, BNR reported.
Scottish Prime Minister Nicholas Sturgeon said health services are facing a combination of the biggest challenges in their history due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Opposition politicians have cited many cases of long ambulance delays, in one of which a patient died after a 40-hour wait.
Sturgeon said her government was working on various plans to deal with the situation, one of which was military assistance.
Similar assistance from the military ambulance is already being provided in England, Sturgeon said, adding that in Scotland, too, the military has been cooperating with the health service in some form for the past 18 months. The Ministry of Health confirmed that it had received the request of Nicola Sturgeon.
Northern Ireland’s health minister, Robin Swan, has also asked the military for help because, he said, health services are more affected by the coronavirus than ever before.
Earlier, he asked the Department of Defense to send 100 military doctors to Northern Ireland to help two hospitals that could not cope with the high number of coronavirus patients.
