New York… It is often said that we either hate it or love it. A kind of love-hate relationship. Rather than being so categorical, I think there are days you love her and days you hate her.
Why?
Quite simply because it is the city of all extremes: dreams, nightmares, successes, failures, wealth, poverty.

You get there in one state of mind, and you leave with another. Better? Worse? Maybe a bit of both, but in any case completely different.
After nine years in the city that never sleeps, here are two things I learned:
- Speed: in New York, you don’t waste time. No BS! Do you like an apartment? Reserve it now! Do you see a cool job posting? Apply now! Are you taking the train? Choose the express! To avoid being “eaten up”, you have to be quick and responsive. Basically, you have to be the first! And that is not innate, it can be learned! Moreover, even on days when we are not in a hurry, we hurry. It’s instinctive: you have to survive.
- Tolerance: at first, seeing an old lady walking her dog in a stroller is simply ha-llu-ci-ner. Then it makes you smile, and after a while, we realize that our eyes have become accustomed to this permanent spectacle and we are no longer surprised. This is where you start to become a true New Yorker. We begin to realize that all this diversity of people that this city offers is in fact its very essence.
New York is a dream, a magic, a “vibe” that you probably won’t find elsewhere. But at what cost?
I’m not sure yet. Maybe the chapter is not closed. Maybe more adventures await me there. But for now, I have decided to take a step back, to savor a little more tranquility, to enjoy (a lot) more of the sun by settling in Florida. I took vacation from my life and from my daily life. Deserved “vacation”.
