Poisonous watermelon killed grandmother and granddaughter

A family of four was injured after consuming a watermelon sprayed with an insecticide in the Russian capital Moscow, Gazeta.ru reported.

A 15-year-old girl and his 61-year-old grandmother died at the hospital, and the mother, 38, remained under observation in the intensive care unit of a Moscow hospital.

The incident happened on September 9, but only now are investigators revealing the cause of the poisoning.

The family bought the watermelon from a local store in a large retail chain. The investigation established that an employee of a disinfection company inadvertently sprayed watermelons while treating the store areas against cockroaches. The fruits are stored near the ground in violation of the rules of the store.

The employee who carried out the spraying was arrested and faces up to 10 years in prison. The man is 39 years old and has used the dangerous substance cyhalothrin.

According to the store manager, samples of the sprayed watermelons showed that “they are much more poisonous than the preparation on the floor.”
