NEW YORK – New York launched the indoor vaccination mandate starting Monday, despite mixed feelings from restaurant owners and customers.

More than three dozen varieties of indoor environments throughout the city are subject to a mandate that requires all guests (and employees) to have proof of vaccination against COVID-19; the application of this policy begins on Monday, September 13.

New Yorkers have had nearly four weeks to get used to the city’s mandate and develop the habit of carrying a CDC vaccination card or having a smartphone app that stores that data. The companies also, in charge of verifying the tests, have been preparing since mid-August for the day of the application. (Any business that does not meet the requirements could face a $ 1,000 fine.)

The policy aims to incite people to get vaccinated, as New York, like the rest of the country, faces a wave of coronavirus driven by the highly infectious delta variant of the virus.

There are exceptions for children under the age of 12, who are not yet eligible for vaccination, and athletes, contractors, and some artists who do not live in the city. The policy also excludes shared meals at church, community centers, office buildings, house parties (even if catered), and people stooping somewhere to pick up food or use the bathroom, among other exemptions. .

  • Hotel banquet rooms
  • Bars
  • Nightclubs
  • Coffee shops
  • Supermarkets with indoor dining room
  • Bakeries
  • Fast food / quick service with indoor dining

• Indoor physical exercise venues
  • Gyms
  • Exercise centers
  • Exercise class locations
  • Indoor pools
  • Indoor studies
  • Dance studios
  • Sports classes

NOTE: Places excluded from this mandate include– Places where food is consumed off-site and / or outdoors only (for example, fast food / quick service without indoor dining), residential buildings, office buildings, child care programs, public schools and programs and non-public pre-K through 12th grade, senior centers, churches that host Sunday potlucks or similar events, community centers, charitable food services, catering at someone’s house.

• Businesses can post the required vaccination poster in a place that is clearly visible to people before they enter the business. You can download the PDF in English here and here in Spanish.
• Familiarize yourself with the accepted vaccination tests listed above.
• Develop a written implementation plan that will be available for inspection. This should include how you will check the vaccination status of staff and clients before they enter, or immediately after they enter your business.
