The market for flexible smartphones is dominated by the Korean giant Samsung, which with recently introduced models Galaxy Z Fold 3 a Flip 3 he strengthened his position even more. Several competitors are looming on the horizon, however, none of them has yet been able to produce a sufficiently convincing puzzle that would endanger Samsung at least a little.
The Chinese company TCL had flexible phones relatively large ambitions, however, she seems to have taken too big a bite. In recent years, the company has shown the public several very interesting prototypes, but none of them seemed to be on the market in the foreseeable future. This was confirmed by TCL’s head of marketing Stefan Streit in his statement.
The official statement says that TCL does not want to release it on the market flexible phone until the price is acceptable to as many customers as possible. Currently, the Chinese company has invested billions of dollars in the development of flexible displays, however, the current production cost, influenced by, among other things, the global pandemic, does not allow TCL to create an affordable flexible smartphone.
TCL whistled flexible phones are reportedly too expensive
The question, however, is how “affordable” TCL flexible phone is. The closest to real production was apparently the so-called Project Chicago, which he recalled Galaxy Z Flip 3. It was to have an internal 6.67 ″ AMOLED display, followed by a 1.1 ″ external AMOLED display. Inside was a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G chipset accompanied by 6 GB of RAM, 128 GB of internal memory and a 3,545 mAh battery. There were to be two cameras on the back, namely a 48Mpx main sensor and a 16Mpx wide-angle lens. A 44Mpx camera was to be used for the selfie.
According to Streit, this smartphone should have cost less than $ 800 (approximately CZK 17,500 without VAT), which is significantly less than how much Flip 3 from Samsung is sold for. If even this TCL price does not seem affordable for most customers, then we certainly have something to look forward to in the future.
