China successfully launched a new direct transmission satellite (STD) from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in southwest China’s Sichuan province on Thursday, according to the Xinhua news agency. The Zhongxing-9B satellite was launched aboard a Long March-3B rocket and entered the planned orbit successfully.
The new STD is designed to operate for 15 years and will be operated by China Satellite Communications, said the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation.
The Zhongxing-9B, equipped with specially designed transponders, can support the HD video program streaming 4K and 8K and provide high-quality live streaming services of major events such as the upcoming Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
Also, the new STD provide timely and reliable communication services for emergency rescues and disaster relief. This launch was the 388th mission of the Long March series carrier rockets.
