“The flu season has not started in Turkey yet, we do not have a single flu case yet. There is no such case at the moment, but it is theoretically possible. The delta variant is so common that there are still around 500 thousand active cases.
Since we test those with symptoms, we say ’90 percent of them are more or less asymptomatic’, but we cannot detect them. That means ‘there are around 5 million active cases in total’. In the period when there were so many cases, we saw the results in the flu board about 1 month ago. Many viruses, which we saw very rarely last year, show a serious increase this year. The only reason for this is; that we no longer follow the mask and distance rule this year as before. Naturally, when we catch it, a person may also have the coronavirus multiplying in their throat at the time, so you can detect both.
When we take samples from flu and cold cases, we see that there is more than one virus in many cases. Both viruses can be present in the body at the same time, one of which can cause disease, the other can only multiply in the throat; but it cannot be both at the same time. The disease is only caused by a virus at the same time, but when you do a PCR test in the person’s throat, you can find more than one virus. Theoretically, it might be coronavirus, it might be a flu virus, maybe it’s the flu, but at the same time, the coronavirus can be in your throat.”
‘WE WILL SEE FLU PLUS CORONAVIRUS CASE THIS YEAR’
prof. Dr. Ceyhan stated that this situation may be encountered with the start of the flu season this year, “We will probably experience this when the flu season starts. Influenza virus has increased compared to last year in the Southern Hemisphere. They experience the flu season before us. In the Northern Hemisphere, only us. Not only that, we will see an increase in flu cases this year in other countries as well. Last year we had only one confirmed case of the virus, this year it will probably be well above that. So people should not neglect to get their flu shots. One of the reasons why there were so few cases last year is that the flu vaccine Compared to previous years, more was done.
