Emma Raducanu: A British teenager wins the US Open
The 18-year-old, whose father is from Bucharest, Romania and mother to Sheyang in China, won the US Open final on Saturday in straight sets 6-4 and 6-3. The new US Open champion was quick to show her love for Britain by tweeting an image of herself holding the Union flag in one hand and the trophy in the other, triumphantly declaring to its 450,000 followers: “We take it HOMEEE.”
The unlikely champion, who was educated in Bromley, south-east London, started playing tennis at the age of five and attributes her success to her parents.
Discussing her parents’ influence on her career earlier this week, she said: “I think the calm and mental toughness definitely comes from my upbringing.
“I think my parents both instilled in me from a young age to definitely have a positive attitude on the court.

“When I was younger it was definitely forbidden if I had a bad attitude.
“So from a young age I definitely learned this and it has followed me until now.”
And speaking last year, she said of her parents Ian and Renee, “They were really hard on me when I was a kid.
“They were arrogant to a degree, not just in tennis but in everything. I think I developed this mentality from a young age.

“On the side of my mother’s family, when I go to China, they are so mentally resilient. It’s like nothing can bring them down.
“I would say I get a lot of my inspiration from her. My mother worked very hard.
The young British star, who obtained an A in maths and an A * in economics in her baccalaureate this year, is also fluent in Mandarin thanks to her mother.
Speaking at Wimbledon earlier this year, Raducanu revealed that she also has close ties to her father’s homeland and travels to Romania every year.
She said: “My grandmother, Mamiya, still lives in the center of Bucharest. I go back there a few times a year, I stay with her, I see her.

“That’s really nice. I love food, to be honest. I mean, the food is amazing. And my grandmother’s cooking is also something special. I have ties to Bucharest. ”
Her choice of outfit, which she wore to each round of the US Open, was praised by her fans on social media.
One wrote on Twitter: “Emma Raducanu is British and has played for Great Britain. But she is also Romanian and wore the colors of Romania. Immigrants more than anyone else understand that borders are often just artificial lines drawn on a piece of paper. Or at least they should be. ”

She is also deeply proud of her English upbringing and took to Instagram earlier this year – wearing an English football shirt – as she cheered on the Three Lions when they faced Denmark in the semi-final of Euro 2020.

He tweeted: “The story of Emma Raducanu is the story of London. Born in Canada to Chinese and Romanian parents, she moved to London at the age of two.
“Here in London, we embrace and celebrate our diversity. And if you work hard and get a helping hand, you can accomplish it all. #USOpen. ”
Labor MP Rosena Allin-Khan added: “Emma Raducanu’s parents are Romanian and Chinese, she was born in Canada herself but still proudly identifies as British – she just won the US Open.
“Remember this, being British can be a real mix. That is why we must be an open and welcoming country. ”
Judy Murray tweeted a photo of Raducanu in her youth with Romanian tennis player Simona Halep.
She tweeted: “We should never underestimate the importance of female role models in sport and create opportunities for young athletes to connect with them. Emma Raducanu’s father is Romanian and here she is with Simona Halep. ”
