An exciting edition of the northern derby between Fc Groningen on sc Heerenveen did not yield a winner on Sunday afternoon. The first half was for the visitors, the second half for the home team: 1-1.
With one debutant each on the field – Nicolas Madsen at Heerenveen and Bjorn Meijer at Groningen – both teams started the game expectantly. However, the initiative was with Heerenveen, who took the lead after nineteen minutes: Tomas Suslov let himself be trumped, Joey Veerman found Tibor Halilovic and the Croatian midfielder signed for his third Eredivisiegoal of the season.

Groningen coach Danny Buijs intervened hard at half time: Michael de Leeuw, debutant Meijer and Marin Sverko were replaced by Romano Postema, Bart van Hintum and Daleho Irandust. Spurred on by the audience in the Euroborg, it instantly became a match worth watching. Immediately after the break Cyril Ngonge hit the post next to Heerenveen goalkeeper Erwin Mulder.
After 68 minutes it was still hit: Ngonge headed in a corner from Suslov impeccably. Groningen then also went on the hunt for the 2-1, but it never came. In fact, Heerenveen had the best chance, but Veerman shot a free kick on the post after Groningen defender Mike te Wierik had received his second yellow card from referee Rob Dieperink.
