Rugby Championship: Australia, carried by Cooper, offers South Africa 28-26

Gold Coast (Australia), Sep 12, 2021 (AFP) – Australia won their first game of the Rugby Championship by winning on the wire (28-26) at home against South Africa on Sunday, thanks to a big performance by Quade Cooper, back in selection after four years of absence.

After the two defeats against the All Blacks, Australia opens its counter but remains six points behind its opponent of the day, before the return confrontation next Saturday in Brisbane (9:05 am).

The South African world champions are second in the Rugby Championship and point despite this five-point loss to the All Blacks, while Argentina is last with three losses.

Back with the Wallabies four years after his last match, Cooper managed seven penalties (8th, 14th, 33rd, 40th + 1, 53rd, 63rd, 80th + 2) and a transformation (18th) for his 71st selection, or 23 of 28 Australian points.

The 33-year-old gave his team, down 26-25 at Siren, the victory with a 40m penalty in the 80th + 2 that freed spectators at the CBUS Super Stadium in Gold Coast, eastern town from the country.
