The government team’s determination to give a new luster to the Campoamor theater’s façade is beginning to show results. The mayor, Alfredo Canteli, closely follows the cleaning work that has been underway for a few weeks and that now allows a clear view of the before and after the building’s facelift.
The Mayor explained that his team is working “intensely to recover the city’s monumental heritage.” Canteli emphasizes that it is “an acquired commitment” and is going to “fulfill it”, as evidenced by the progress of the works on the façade of the theater.
The effort to renovate the Campoamor theater coincides with the project to remove the historic street lamp from the center of the square, to restore it, and to change the arrangement of those lights. That project, according to municipal sources, wants to be ready for the delivery of the Princess Awards, which will foreseeably take place at the theater on October 22.
Not surprisingly, when Canteli refers to the cleaning of the façade, he emphasizes that it is a matter of those of the city seeing their heritage in good condition but also those who come to visit Oviedo. “Our city has important heritage elements,” he said yesterday, “which should shine in all their splendor for the enjoyment, not only of the people of Oviedo, but also of all those who visit us.”
The pressure water cleaning of the Campoamor façade is showing that the theater needed a revision for many years, given the contrast between the areas already reviewed and those that still need to be cleaned up.
In any case, this general cleaning of the main entrance will be completed, according to municipal sources, with another work that will varnish the letters of “Campoamor Theater”, above the arches of the main entrance.
All these tasks will be completed, as has been said, with that other reform of the square which will consist of enhancing the main entrance with a set of two lampposts, provisionally removing the historic one that was in the middle of the square and the sculpture “Esperanza Caminando ”. Clearing the front of the three main entrance doors will allow for more orderly access to the Awards ceremony. The sculpture and the lamp, which is badly damaged and will have to be restored, are scheduled to return to the square in another location that the government team has not revealed for now.
