According to the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee), France now has 3.2 million second homes. According to his study, 1 in 10 homes are owned by foreigners. The owners of these real estate are varied. Indeed, these individuals concern a fairly large age group and different nationality.

The acquisition of a second home is a very present phenomenon in France according to INSEE. This is mainly due to the high number of resort houses in the country. However, the owners of these accommodations are not only French. Other people of European nationality own a large part of the second homes in France.
Indeed, these owners come from the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland. Information which confirms that the diversity of holders of secondary real estate in France. However, the majority of these landlords remain French and have house insurance.

An acquisition of wealthy families
The INSEE study reveals that 34% of secondary dwellings belong to more affluent households. Only 3% of this heritage is owned by middle-class families. Figures that confirm that having a daily uninhabited residence with a home insurance is not that simple.
Accommodation for vacationers remains the property of households with a high income. A rather logical phenomenon, especially in some of the most popular localities. In some cities, the housing stock of second homes is particularly high. A rate that greatly exceeds half of the available homes.
This is also the case in the Alps where the trend is at its peak. Wealthy households have resort accommodation in Val Vanoise, Belle-Île-en-Mer, Briançonnais or Haute-Tarentaise. According to INSEE:
Only 10% of main residences, or even less, are occupied by wealthy households.?
Retired and city-dwellers
Insee statistics published this week affirm that:
Among the second homes owned by a household residing in France, 66% are owned by households aged 60 or over, against only 38% of the stock of main homes.
INSEE also reveals that households with secondary properties in the valued localities mentioned above live in metropolitan areas. These areas of real estate establishment concern, among others, the coast, Brittany and Corsica.

According to the institute, these urban areas include:
Aix-Marseille-Provence and Lyon (each with more than 55,000 households concerned), Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nantes, Lille and Nice (from 32,000 to 24,000 households) and Rennes with 20,000 households.
the Greater Paris, for its part, is not affected by the trend. Indeed, the metropolis is home to 348,000 households owning non-primary houses. However, it should be noted that in large cities, second homes are used as professional accommodation.
The study also notes that owners of non-prime real estate lived at least 3 hours’ drive away.
