Danger Sounds! Space Station Shocked by Fire Alarm

Jakarta

Astronaut on the International Space Station (ISS) was woken up by a smoke alarm on Thursday (9/9) morning. The sound of an alarm sounded from the structural part of the Russian module.

Thankfully there were no victims from this incident. The crew survived and the space trip scheduled for today will continue after all the checks are complete.

The alarm sounded from the Zvezda module, a Russian structure that was added to the ISS in 2000. It is not clear what triggered the fire alarm.

According to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti, cosmonaut Oleg Novitsky reported to mission control that the crew smelled smoke and astronaut Frenchman Thomas Pesquet smells burning plastic.

Quoted from Science Alert, Russian space agency Roscosmos said in a tweet that an alarm sounded while the battery was being recharged and all systems were now operating normally.

The air purification system was activated as a rescue measure for the incident. Officials confirmed that the air on the ISS was safe for the crew, but did not say whether there would be a risk if the air was not cleared.

This is not the first time the Zvezda module has experienced such a problem. You ISS also reported smoke coming out of the module in 2014. Then in 2020, astronauts tracked air leaks on the ISS.

Other Russian-owned parts of the ISS have also recently run into trouble. Last week, cosmonauts reported finding cracks in the Zarya module. This module was an early part of the ISS when it was first launched in 1998.

In addition, earlier this month, the module ISS A new Russian named Nauka, mistakenly fired the thrusters and caused the station to flip 540 degrees.

To note, the ISS has been operating for more than 20 years. Now, the station where the astronauts work is starting to show signs of age. Some observers predict the possibility of the ISS will experience a deorbit within this decade.
