Devyne Rensch is not yet a basic player this season Ajax, but he made his debut for the Dutch national team on Tuesday. The eighteen-year-old defender is proud that national coach Louis van Gaal dropped him in the World Cup qualifier against Turkey.
“The debut for the big Orange, no one can take that away from me,” Rensch tells Ajax TVwhile showing his hare. “Danny Blind said to me at one point that I could warm up. Then I thought it might be in there after all. After two minutes he already said I would come in. Then my heart started to beat a little faster to knock.”
The fact that Rensch also provided the assist for the 6-1 made his evening complete. “My debut, a victory and that too in the Johan Cruijff Arena. My day couldn’t be better.” According to tradition, he spoke in the dressing room afterwards. “I said I’m very proud to make my debut and to experience it with these guys. They are cool guys. I thanked them all. They welcomed me with open arms, I felt right at home.”
Rensch also got a good impression from Van Gaal. “That he can be your trainer at the big Orange and that he lets you make your debut, that’s great. I think it’s a very good trainer. I think everyone had to get used to him, because he was new to many. But I I think he’s a really good trainer. He’s always honest, that’s the most important thing.”
Despite his Orange debut, Rensch still sees plenty of room for improvement. He is not yet a basic player at Ajax. “My start was not too good this season. I have not had a good preparation due to injuries, but luckily I am fit now. Hopefully I can make minutes again soon.”
