Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its second electric sedan called the EQE at the IAA in Munich. It is an electric version of the E-Class and will soon completely replace the conventional one. It has a completely different design than has been the custom with limousines of this brand so far, and it may seem that it has lost some of the majesty that large Mercedes have so far radiated with their design and proportions.

Gorden Wagener, chief designer for Top Gear, spoke about it: “Electrification will kill a three-seater sedan for several reasons,” he began boldly.

“Aerodynamics is the first. Second, with a 15-inch-tall battery, the three-compartment sedan doesn’t look good. You have to do something that visually dilutes the height, ”he says. “That’s why we came up with the bold design of the EQ models, because they look elongated, stylish,” he explains.

“Electrification will change the proportions of cars. We need to make sure that not everyone looks the same, but such a fear has existed for 30 years. We have managed to make cars visually different before and I believe that we can do it in the future as well, ”Wagener does not spare optimism.

“What you see in the electrification is that the grid on the bow is disappearing. All those startups, they don’t have a grid – they have a faceless bow, anonymous. They look very similar to each other. Do they look aggressive? No. They want to look more like a supercomputer on wheels, “he adds.

From the look of EQE and EQS, however, it doesn’t look like Wagener wants to avoid such a thing. He even says that the three-compartment sedan will not mourn. “The three-compartment sedan is the most difficult in terms of design. To look really good is challenging. The sports car, on the other hand, is very easy, ”he says.
