Who will succeed Stade Toulousain in the Champions Cup and Montpellier Hérault Rugby in the Challenge Cup? The two European Cups will be back this season with four group days in the Champions Cup and five in the Challenge Cup before starting the knockout matches. The two finals will take place on May 27 and 28 at the Stade Vélodrome in Marseille.
Champions Cup 2021/2022
The eight French clubs had very different destinies during the draw. Rather affordable for the title holder, the Stade Toulousain (Cardiff, Wasps), the last finalist La Rochelle (Glasgow Warriors, Bath), Union Bordeaux-Bègles (Leicester Tigers, Scarlets) or ASM Clermont Auvergne (Ulster Rugby, Sale Sharks).
The other four French teams have a more complex draw with Castres (Harlequins, Munster Rugby), Racing 92 (Northampton Saints, Ospreys), Stade Français (Connacht Rugby, Bristol Bears) and Montpellier (Exeter Chiefs, Leinster Rugby). Note that the eight best ranked clubs from each pool will qualify for the knockout matches.

For this second European Cup, six French clubs are engaged to try to succeed Montpellier, winner of the previous edition. If Toulon is the favorite, Lyon will also be able to play its card to the full thanks to its recent recent experiences in the Champions Cup. For their part, Brive, Pau and the two promoted Biarritz and Perpignan will each try to secure a qualification in their respective pools.

The three best ranked clubs from each pool as well as the fourth highest ranked club, as well as the three clubs ranked 9th to 11th in each Champions Cup pool, will then qualify for the knockout stages of the Challenge Cup.
