The prices of passenger transport by plane fell by a total of 17.8 percent, writes Statistics Norway.
It was the estimated prices of international flights that contributed to the decline.
In addition, prices for furniture groups, food and clothing fell from last month.
Historically high electricity prices
The opposite was true for electricity prices, including grid rent, which rose by 12.5 per cent from July to a historically high level in August.
The sharp increase contributed to the current twelve-month growth for the CPI increasing by 0.4 percentage points in August.
From July to August last year, the increase in electricity prices was only 3.9 per cent.
Power prices characterize the CPI
From August 2020 to August 2021, the consumer price index rose 3.4 per cent. Here, electricity prices contributed most to the rise with an increase of as much as 97.9 per cent.
It is first and foremost the power prices that contributed to this development, which must be seen in connection with the very low price level through last year. Power prices were at their lowest level in July 2020.
Food prices pulled down
Prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages fell 2.9 per cent from August 2020, which dampened the rise.
The price level has been below last year since March, says director of groceries at Virke Jarle Hammerstad.
The tax on mineral water was removed with effect from 1 July, which Virke believes has contributed to lower food prices in July and August.
– Competition keeps prices down
It is also normal for the price level to fall from July to August. This year, price increases from suppliers hit in July, while there are normally more promotions in August.
– The development this summer shows that the competition between the grocery chains helps to keep prices down, despite increased prices from suppliers, Hammerstad says.
Prices for passenger transport by air also showed a decline from August 2020.
Core inflation (CPI-ATE) increased by 1 per cent from August 2020 to August 2021, while it fell by 0.6 per cent from July to August.
