The planned maternity hospital on the Bohunice campus is to be the most modern in Central Europe. The first children should be born in it in four years at the earliest. Now, according to the director of the Brno University Hospital, Jaroslav Štěrba, the Ministry of Finance and Health has approved the signing of a contract with the project supplier. The giant maternity hospital will cost approximately two billion crowns.
–
“Within a week, we will sign a contract with a selected supplier from four bidders. It runs according to plan. Of course, various surprises can come into play, for example in the form of a 30% increase in the price of construction work, “said Štěrba. The name of the winning designer has not yet been announced by the hospital.
–
The hospital is also already working on the future of the existing complex. Part of the maternity clinic, where over six thousand children are born each year, is housed in facilities at the Grain Market in the city center. Therefore, the management of the facility signed a memorandum of cooperation with Masaryk University on Wednesday. Together they want to give the premises a new use. The local buildings have served as a hospital since 1888, and the workplace was significantly expanded during the First Republic.

Psychological counseling and social services
According to the rector of Masaryk University, Martin Bareš, the extensive campus offers many possibilities. “I see great development potential here, which will offer spaces for research, education or practical training. We want to connect the previously not fully interconnected worlds of science and medicine and the social sciences, “he explained.
–
In the premises of the existing maternity hospital, they want, for example, a center for psychological counseling or social services. Among other things, they plan to move laboratories here from the Bohunice campus. “We are also discussing, for example, one area that the Rector and I call Healthy Aging, which is a very large area with the aim of keeping seniors in the home environment for as long as possible,” said Štěrba. For example, a day hospital should help.

Negotiations with the Ministry of Finance will follow. The university and the hospital want to use their own financial resources and money from European structural funds for the project.

The giant maternity hospital will be in four years
Construction of the new maternity hospital is scheduled to begin in 2023, with the hospital management expected to be completed two years later. The giant clinic is to cost 1.95 billion crowns, most of the money will come from the state budget.
–
“The Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics, University Hospital Brno is key throughout the country. The investment will create the most modern workplace in Central Europe. We have the funds set aside for the investment, “said the Minister of Health Adam Vojtěch (for YES). The rest, about 600 million, is co-financed by the University Hospital Brno.
–
The main reason for the construction of the new facility is the current division of the largest Czech obstetrics clinic into two areas. The two workplaces in Bohunice and at the Grain Market are about seven kilometers apart. This causes organizational and personnel complications.
–
“Due to the division of the workplace, the operation of the clinic has become unbearable and unsustainable in the long run,” said Vít Weinberger, head of the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the University Hospital Brno and the Faculty of Medicine at Masaryk University.
–
The construction of a new clinic is planned for a long time. Last year, Vojtěch ranked the maternity hospital among the key state health projects. He received registration from the resort in the middle of last year. The new pavilion is intended to increase patient comfort, and the project includes, among other things, areas for childbirth without medical assistance.
