As part of the neighborhood days, the mayor of Toulouse, Jean-Luc Moudenc went this morning to large rue Saint-Michel to discuss its future transformation in one direction.
This new development of the main rue Saint-Michel provides that the lane from Rangueil to the city center remains open to traffic, while the other would be closed. “We are there to take the temperature and listen to traders for this new development”, announces Jean-Luc Moudenc, accompanied during this stroll by Jonnhy Dunal, the mayor of Saint-Michel and Jean-Baptiste De Scorraille, elected in charge of neighborhood hearts.
“On the lane withdrawn from traffic, we want to give more space to bikes, soft modes and greening. For my part, I consider that the main Saint-Michel axis is an extension of the city center. This small setting between the Canal du Midi and the Garonne deserves to be appeased and to look to the future ”, specifies Jonnhy Dunal.
“Too much drug and cigarette trafficking”
At the end of these various consultations undertaken with traders, residents, associations, technical services … A first experiment of the large one-way street of Saint-Michel should be launched from February 2022 and until the end of the year. year “to collect what works and what does not”, continues the mayor of Toulouse. The works would not start until 2023. A budget of 8 million euros is planned for this new development, knowing that, generally, faced with this change of configuration, the inhabitants are delighted and the traders more reluctant.

We hope that with future work and the intensification of police checks, that can change, ”adds this bar owner.
For this supermarket boss, whose “weekends are more and more agitated because of the dealers who harass the girls”, the situation is more and more tense in the district, evidenced by a bullet impact on his window. “The other problem is the threats. I saw people take out knives the length of my leg, ”he testifies.
Very attentive during these interviews, Jean-Luc Moudenc promised to intensify the police checks. “The problem is to catch them in the act. It is also necessary to sanction the customers because it feeds delinquency ”he concluded.
