Need to Know, Johnson and Johnson Vaccine Side Effects from WHO Research

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a provisional recommendation for the use of a vaccine from Johnson and Johnson (J&J) for Covid-19. What is felt in the body when the Johnson and Johnson vaccine is injected later must be known.

The J&J vaccine differs from other vaccines in that it is given only one dose. Studies have shown the Johnson and Johnson vaccine to be safe and effective for the prevention of COVID-19 in people over the age of 18.

Please note, this vaccine is also safe for people with medical conditions such as hypertension, chronic lung disease, significant heart disease, obesity, and diabetes.

The results of the study also found this vaccine had no problems in people with HIV. However, WHO recommends that people with HIV remain counseled before vaccination. Further studies are needed to assess the efficacy of the vaccine for people with HIV.

The J&J vaccine efficacy rate was 85.4 percent against severe illness and 93.1 percent against hospitalization.

However, the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, like any other, has side effects. Quoted from the CDC, the side effects of the J&J vaccine are generally mild and can resolve on their own within a few days.

The following are the side effects of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine:

  • headache
  • fever
  • shivering
  • injection site pain
  • fatigue.

These side effects usually appear within a day or two after the vaccine is injected.

Others, the side effects found were also in the form of fainting about 15 minutes after giving the vaccine. Of the 8 million vaccines, there were 635 fainting events or 8 events per 1 million vaccines.

Less commonly, side effects of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine can lead to a risk of blood clots with low platelets 3-15 days after the vaccine. These side effects occur in 7 per 1 million vaccines.

In other instances, a number of people have also reported Guillain-Barré syndrome. This syndrome is a rare disorder characterized by the body’s immune system destroying nerve cells, causing muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis.
