The armed forces commissioner of the German Bundestag, Eva Högl (SPD), as a consequence of the Afghanistan mission of the German armed forces, calls for the objectives of ongoing missions abroad to be questioned. “The Mali mission has to be analyzed again in detail, we have to see what goals we are pursuing there, how we are working with the local government, with which international partners we are working and, above all, what our soldiers are doing there should, “said Högl in an interview with Phoenix. According to the experiences made in Afghanistan, this applies particularly to the EUTM training mission. “The soldiers are wondering whether what they are doing there, the training of the security forces in Mali and Niger too, whether it actually supports it. Because in Afghanistan they have found that the training was not sustainable, and that is why we have to talk about it too, “said Högl.

At the same time, the Commissioner for the Armed Forces emphasized that the mission in Afghanistan was not pointless. “Something has been built up in Afghanistan in the last 20 years, freedom rights have been made possible, democracy and the rule of law have been carefully built up and investments in education have been made. If that failed, it was not because of the efforts of our soldiers,” said Högl. They would have “given everything” there and of course asked themselves the question of meaning. That is why a thorough and careful evaluation of the deployment by a study commission is needed in the coming legislative period.
