On September 10, Harold Pinter’s drama “Treason” directed by Ināra Sluckas will have its premiere in the Actors’ Hall of the Latvian National Theater, the representatives of the theater informed.
Harold Pinter is a 20th-century drama classic who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2005 for “opening the abyss and opening the door to the locked spaces of consciousness in his plays.” As the theater pointed out, the play “Betrayal” is Harold Pinter’s most popular work, which tells the story of a seemingly classic love triangle – Emma, her husband and her husband’s friend. “Harold Pinter elevates the concept of” betrayal “to a much more complex and ambiguous level. To betray another person is always to betray oneself, and it brings with it frustration in oneself and others, dislike and anger – for everything that has been done and what has not been done. “All three characters of the play feel lonely in the relationship and try to find the” I “lost in the daily routine,” explained the creators of the show.
This is a much-anticipated reunion with Harold Pinter for Ināra Sluckka, because her first directing work was Pinter’s play “Favorite”. The director told about the new production: “Harold Pinter’s“ Betrayal ”radically changes the perception of the reader and the viewer, because the viewer knows more than the characters in the play, ie the events take place in reverse chronological order. However, the reverse chronology is not smooth – successive scenes are followed by a jump in time. Pinter’s stingy information about images, seemingly simple dialogues, pauses and silence must be deciphered. The show gives everyone the opportunity to create their own story, which depends on our experience and knowledge. The theme of betrayal is addressed here on several levels – in love, friendship, towards children, towards people closest to you and towards yourself… ”
