The tragic incident took place in the Siberian city of Norilsk, while Gen. Evgeniy Zinichev tried to save another person’s life
Russia’s Emergency Situations Minister Yevgeny Zinichev died during an exercise in the Siberian city of Norilsk. This was announced today by his department, TASS reported.
“We are saddened to announce that during the performance of his official duty, during a stay in Norilsk on an interdepartmental exercise to protect the Arctic zone from emergencies, saving human lives, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Evgeniy Zinichev tragically died,” the ministry said.
The large-scale exercise in the Arctic zone began yesterday, when the Russian ministry announced that 12 scenarios for liquidation of emergencies on water and on land will be worked out. Details of the 55-year-old general’s death have not been released. The latest announcement of the press service of the CIS is from October 8, and it is announced that Evgeniy Zinichev is in the Krasnoyarsk region, where he will check the construction of the new fire service in Norilsk during a working visit.
According to unofficial information in the Russian media, however the minister lost his life after falling off a cliff, trying to save a cameraman from the film crew of the exercise, who also died.
Evgeny Nikolaevich Zinichev headed the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in 2018. He was born on August 18, 1966 in St. Petersburg. From 2006 to 2015, he worked in the bodyguard of the President of Russia, who accompanied Vladimir Putin on working visits to the country and abroad.
Since 2015, Gen. Zinichev headed the Kaliningrad Oblast Federal Security Service, and a year later Putin appointed him acting governor of Kaliningrad. He remained in office for only a few months, and in October 2016, Evgeniy Zinichev was appointed Deputy Director of the Federal Security Service.
In December 2018, by decree of the Russian head of state, Zinichev was appointed Minister of Emergency Situations and was promoted to the rank of Colonel General. At the end of last year, Evgeniy Zinichev was promoted to army general.
