STAVANGER / OSLO (VG) Both in interrogation and in a book, the man accused of murder has claimed that he was not known in the area where Birgitte Tengs (17) was killed. His ex-girlfriend reacts to that.
The woman from Haugesund was in love with the man now charged with murder for a few years in the early 1990s. In a previous police interrogation, the murder suspect has told about this relationship, and that it ended in January 1994.
It is less than a year and a half before Birgitte Tengs was killed.
– I got to know him when I was 16-17 years old through a friend. He was a rocking guy with long hair. He seemed handsome and nice in every possible way, she says.
According to the ex-girlfriend, the two were together for two or three years. During this period, the man accused of murder is said to have gotten an apartment in Haugesund where the two lived together for a while.
– He was calm, very calm to be such a young boy. He did not drink alcohol or smoke. Outwardly, he was his mother – in – law’s dream, quite simply, she tells VG.
According to the woman, the Tengs accused must have been a man with a very small circle of friends when she met him in the early 1990s.
– I lost a bit of my circle of friends when we were together. It was just me and him, and it was just me and him. We had no mutual friends either, she says.

Did not suspect him
In the time after Birgitte Tengs was found killed, and the police hunted one or more perpetrators, the woman from Haugesund had no idea that the ex-boyfriend could be behind it.
– No, I did not think of him at all. I did not think of him at all, she says.
In 2016, just over 20 years after the unsolved murder, author Bjørn Olav Jahr wrote the book “Who killed Birgitte Tengs?”. The ex-girlfriend has read the book and says that she has recently been told that the man she was with in the 1990s was interviewed in it.
– I respond that he (journ.anm. Tengs-accused) in the book says that he does not know where Gamle Sundsvei on Karmøy is, she says.
Gamle Sundsvei is the road that passes the place where Tengs was found killed.
– We drove a good number of cars when we were together, and if anyone knew about every detour on Karmøy, it was him. He knew about every single path. I therefore reacted to the fact that he said in the book that he did not know, says the ex-girlfriend today.

Also in the interrogation of witnesses from December 1995, the man says that he was not known in the area where Tengs was killed.
VG has submitted to the man’s defender Stian Kristiansen the allegations in this case.
– I have no comment on this, he writes in an SMS.

High-heeled shoes and underwear
After a while as cohabitants in the apartment in Haugesund, the ex-girlfriend began to notice a number of small «rarities», As she herself refers to them.
– I started to find women’s clothing in his closet, including high-heeled shoes, dresses and some sexy lingerie, she says.
The observations and findings made her start asking questions to the man now charged with murder.
– I started to wonder what it was. He gave me all sorts of excuses, like there were gifts for me and things like that. After this, it was a bit of a struggle with some small quarrels. I drank a little, but he did not, she says.
The man has been convicted several times, including for abusive behavior and burglary, mainly in women’s private homes, where he stole clothes and shoes from them. The judgments VG is familiar with range from the early 1990s to 2005.
