Floods hit Mexico: 17 COVID-19 patients died in hospital | Peace

In the state of Hidalgo in Mexico, torrential rains caused flooding and the river overflowed its banks. Due to bad weather, 17 patients of a hospital in the city of Tula died, most were infected with COVID-19.

More than 40 more patients were evacuated by emergency workers. According to preliminary information, about two thousand houses were damaged by water, reports Reuters (scroll to the bottom of the page to watch the video).

Hidalgo Governor Omar Fayad clarified that 15 or 16 of the 17 deaths in the hospital were coronavirus patients. The death occurred during a flood, when electricity went out in a medical facility.

In pictures posted on social media, desperate nurses pushed beds out of the hospital to try to rescue patients. Some of the medics were knee-deep in the water.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador urged at-risk residents to seek refuge, high ground or visit friends or family. He warned that the rains would continue.
