Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Don’t just remember the question of how high the content is fat and the calories when looking food. The problem is, there are also high-cholesterol foods to watch out for.

Keep in mind, cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke. But in the body there are two types of cholesterol. First is low density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol which is known as the culprit of various cardiovascular problems. The accumulated fat forms plaque and clogs blood vessels. The second is high density lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol. HDL plays a role in controlling LDL levels.

There are various causes of high cholesterol in the body, including an unhealthy lifestyle and consumption of foods high in cholesterol.

Tri Juli Edi Tarigan, Head of the Division of Metabolic Endocrine and Diabetes, Department of Internal Medicine, FKUI-RSCM, said that regular monitoring needs to be carried out considering that high cholesterol levels often do not show symptoms.

“Often there are no complaints, except extreme, high” [kadar kolesterolnya], can be headaches, pain, ‘kemeng’ in the nape of the neck. Sometimes when there’s an attack [jantung] just found out,” he said some time ago.

Some of the symptoms that people with high cholesterol often complain about are back neck pain, fatigue, and chest pain. But actually these symptoms are signs of other serious diseases that may occur due to increased levels of cholesterol in the blood.

Cholesterol does not rise immediately after eating foods high in cholesterol. But cholesterol levels should be kept monitored, especially those of you who have a history of high cholesterol.

Normal cholesterol levels vary from person to person. The following are normal cholesterol levels for adults.

reported by Medical News Today, the normal total cholesterol level for adults is less than 200 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL).

Cholesterol that ranges between 200 and 239 mg/dL falls into the high limit, while cholesterol levels above 240 mg/dL fall into the high category.

In adults, LDL should be less than 100 mg/dL. It’s just that if it’s still in the 100-129 mg/dL range, it’s still normal for adults who don’t have any health problems.

Bad cholesterol levels between 130-159 mg/dL are the high limit and 160-189 mg/dL falls into the high category. Furthermore, LDL in the range of 190 mg/dL or more is considered very high.

Meanwhile, the higher the HDL (high density lipoprotein) or good cholesterol, the better. Good cholesterol less than 40 mg/dL should be watched out for because it is the greatest risk of heart disease.

Meanwhile, HDL which is in the range of 41-59 mg/dL is in the high limit. The optimal level of normal cholesterol for HDL levels in adults is 60 mg/dL or more.
