Model Holland: water bus to connect Cologne, Duisburg with Düsseldorf | Regional

Düsseldorf – The largest water transport company “Waterbus” in the Netherlands with 1.9 million passengers annually is a role model for Düsseldorf!

The new black-green government in the town hall is currently preparing, in cooperation with the Rhine region, a “Rhine shuttle” connection with eight landing stages between Cologne in the south, Düsseldorf in the middle and Duisburg in the north.

The Netherlands are showing the way: Millions of passengers are already being transported there with “Waterbus” lines. Top speed: 40 km / h

The new Cologne interim report for a section between Cologne’s districts of Niehl and Porz is currently being discussed in the Düsseldorf City Hall. Parliamentary group leader Rolf Tups (65, CDU): “It means a giant step forward, expressly recommends building a water bus system to reduce commuter traffic and thus the pollution on our roads.”

The politician is confident that the parallel feasibility study for the entire route and “possibly beyond” will have the same result. Tups said that Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst (45, CDU) welcomed the new findings: “We have already made an appointment.”

The report recommends speedboats for the Rhein-Shuttle, which can transport at least 100 people with bicycles, if possible. You should manage at least 30 km / h and have reliable timetables. According to the expert opinion, battery-electric drives and “hybrid solutions” are possible depending on the infrastructure.

Until when this will be implemented is difficult to estimate. But Tups says: “We want to hurry! If we want to achieve our goal of being climate-neutral in Düsseldorf by 2035 – the shift from commuter traffic to buses, trains, bicycles and the Rhine is an important component. “
