Astronomers call it a Hot Jupiter with an orbital period of 10 days.
REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — An international team of astronomers found a planet outside the solar system (exoplanet) that is very hot. The planet was discovered using the US Space Agency’s (NASA) Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS).
New planet discovered is said to be almost twice as big as Jupiter and have non-parallel orbits. Astronomers call it a Hot Jupiter, but it has an orbital period of less than 10 days.
Such exoplanets have high surface temperatures, because they orbit their parent stars very closely. Currently, a team of astronomers led by Samuel HC Cabot from Yale University, United States (US) reports the discovery of a new type of planet outside the solar system.
When observing the bright star designated TOI-1518 with TESS, a transit signal was identified in the light curve of this object. The planetary nature of this signal was confirmed by continued high-resolution observations with the EXPRES spectrograph on the Lowell Telescope.
“We presented the discovery of TOI-1518b — an ultra-hot Jupiter orbiting a bright star (V = 8.95). Transit planets were confirmed using the high-resolution optical transmission spectrum of EXPRES,” said the researchers in the study Phys, Tuesday (7/9).
TOI-1518b has a radius of about 1,875 Jupiter radii. Its mass is uncertain, estimated not to exceed 2.3 Jupiter masses. Future radial velocity monitoring of this system will place more constraints on its mass. The planet orbits its host every 1.9 days, at a distance of nearly 0.04 AU from it.
