Harianjogja.com, JAKARTA – An asteroid is hurtling at an incredible speed in space. NASA classifies it as a potentially hazardous “Near-Earth Object” (NEO).
“Near-Earth Objects [NEOs] are comets and asteroids that have been propelled by the gravitational attraction of nearby planets into orbits that allow them to enter Earth’s environment.”
The asteroid, named 2021 NY1 is moving at nearly 21,000 miles per hour with a width of 427 and 984 feet.
The asteroid is expected to pass Earth on September 22. Meanwhile, NASA defines NEO as “an asteroid or comet that approaches our planet less than 1.3 times the distance from Earth to the Sun.”
Just like all NEOs currently being monitored by NASA, NY1 2021 is expected to have no impact on Earth.
Analysts from SpaceReference NY1 2021 will be considered a Near-Earth Object for the second time on September 23, 2105.
Dubbed 2021 NY1, the massive asteroid is estimated to be 130 meters to 300 meters in diameter. In comparison, the Golden Gate Bridge has a height of only 227 meters.
According to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory asteroid tracker, it is estimated to be 130 meters to 300 meters in diameter. In comparison, the Golden Gate Bridge has a height of only 227 meters.
Previously, asteroid 2021 QC1, passed Earth on September 1. This asteroid is smaller, with a diameter of only 71 meters to 160 meters.
The bigger one will fly on September 9. Dubbed 2010 RJ53, this colossal asteroid has a diameter of about 774 meters, about twice the size of the Empire State Building in New York.
Despite the size of these asteroids, it is unlikely that any of them will ever approach Earth. Of the three asteroids, only 2010 RJ53 will fly closer to Earth than the Moon, its closest estimated distance of 366,000 kilometers from the planet.
In comparison, the Moon maintains a distance of 384,400 kilometers from Earth.
However, according to NASA calculations, Earth is free from the risk of an asteroid impact for the next century.
