El Salvador became the first country in which bitcoin is now the official currency

President Naib Bukele announced that the country has already bought 200 bitcoins

Bitcoin is now the official currency of El Salvador. It is the first country in the world to make such a reform.

Salvador President Naib Bukele announced today that his government had bought its first 200 bitcoins as part of the country’s plan to officially accept cryptocurrency as legal tender, Reuters reported.

The currency change takes effect despite the disapproval of a large part of the population. According to opinion polls, just under 5 percent of people in El Salvador can trade bitcoin, and every second in 10 people have not even heard of cryptocurrency.

Almost 70 percent disapprove of the introduction of bitcoin as the country’s official currency. Twenty years ago, El Salvador gave up its own currency and replaced it with the US dollar.

It will continue to be used in the country, but together with bitcoin. It is predicted that due to the experiment with bitcoin, El Salvador will sink even more financially.

“Our brokers will buy a lot more as the deadline approaches,” the president wrote on Twitter.
