Now, with his hardline movement back in power, Mullah Neda Mohammad has vowed to continue fighting his rival militants, the Islamic State (ISIS) group.
After the Taliban victory in August, Mohammad took over as governor of Nangarhar province, an Afghan-Pakistani ISIS stronghold.

“We are looking for people who are hiding,” Mohammad told AFP, claiming his forces had captured 70 to 80 ISIS members since they took control of the Nangarhar provincial capital of Jalalabad, Afghanistan’s fifth-largest city.

ISIS has been responsible for some of the deadliest attacks in Afghanistan in recent years, including massacring civilians in mosques, holy sites, public squares and even hospitals.

ISIS claimed responsibility for a devastating suicide bombing near Kabul airport on August 26 that killed more than 100 Afghans and 13 US troops.
