Political reporter Xander van der Wulp about the political struggle with the nitrogen problem:
“D66 is a little harder on this theme than VVD and CDA; that party wants to go much further to reduce livestock. VVD and CDA have promised farmers that there would be no compulsory buyout during this term of office.
But now a new cabinet is coming. Last year, the Remkes Committee mapped out that something really needs to be done if the Netherlands wants to continue to comply with European naturalists. In the end, all parties are also aware that drastic measures are needed. Otherwise, the granting of permits for homes and other projects will be worrisomely delayed.
So the outgoing cabinet had various scenarios calculated: which plans yield which reduction at which cost? Somewhere there was still hope to get there before Prinsjesdag, but The Hague sources emphasize today that nothing has been decided yet. It is therefore likely that no major plans will come out on Budget Day, and with this nitrogen and the approach to the housing shortage lie mainly in the formation on top of the pile of complicated issues.”
