A daily dose of vitamin D is recommended for children up to the age of six, but multivitamin products for children are also readily available at pharmacies and supermarkets. However, according to an analysis by Test Aankoop, they are on average four times as expensive.

A study of 34 vitamin D supplements also taught the consumer organization that 11 of them are overdosed, resulting in concrete risks for the health of children, such as growth failure or neurological disorders.

Vitamin D allows children to develop strong bones and teeth. Some foods naturally contain this vitamin, but the amount is too small, so supplements are necessary.

A balanced diet is sufficient for other vitamins and minerals. “Only in the event of a proven deficiency, but always on medical advice, can a supplement be interesting,” it says in the press release of Test Aankoop. “For example, dietary supplements may be recommended for vegetarian and vegan children. The price of these supplements is up to four times higher than that of regular vitamin D supplements: on average just over 11 euros/month instead of 2.5 euros/month.”
