Jewish New Year 2021 – main traditions and prohibitions

Rosh Hashanah is one of the most important Jewish holidays. A characteristic feature of the celebration of the Jewish New Year is the blowing of the shofar during the synagogue service.

This action is interpreted as a challenge to Divine judgment and as a call to repentance. The holiday will begin to be celebrated in the evening on the 6th and will end on the evening of September 8th.

Main traditions

On a holiday, they usually visit synagogues and read prayers for the forgiveness of sins – “slikhot”.

There is a belief that in order to be cleansed of sins, you need to shake your pockets into a pond.

Also on these days the horn is blown. These sounds call to prayer and announce the coming of the New Year.

On the eve of the first day of Rosh Hashanah and on the night of the second day, holiday candles are lit at home.

There is a tradition to immerse a piece of challah (round bread in the shape of a wreath) in honey before a feast.

Fish with head and carrots cut into rings are often served at the festive table.

What is forbidden to do on Rosh Hashanah

  • Work.
  • There are bitter and sour foods. There is a belief that the use of such food in the new year will bring trouble.
  • There are nuts.
