The police in Maastricht have arrested a man who had walked around the street with an ax earlier today. It is unclear why he carried that weapon with him: that has yet to become clear from interrogations by the police.
Around 7 p.m., the police raided a home, where the man was arrested. Before his arrest, according to officers, he had beaten a young woman with a bag on the street. She suffered minor head injuries as a result.
The woman appears to be a random victim, according to police. It is unclear why the man hit her.
Earlier today, the police already warned about the man, who walked around with an ax through the De Heeg district in the southeast of the city. A citizen net message was also sent, which spoke of a man in his 20s with a large build.
A helicopter, police dog and several armed officers were used in the search.
