What do Germans think about hosting Afghan refugees?

German society is divided over the possibility of sheltering large numbers of refugees fleeing Afghanistan, who have been taken over by the Islamist Taliban, according to a poll by YouGov.

About 46% of the respondents to the representative survey rejected this option, while 47% supported it, but not all of the latter believe that Germany should provide protection to Afghan refugees even if other European Union countries do not.

Only 22% of respondents think that Germany should take in large numbers of Afghan refugees, regardless of whether other Member States are doing the same.

At a meeting on Tuesday, EU interior ministers failed to reach a common position on how to deal with migration from Afghanistan.

Countries such as Austria, the Czech Republic and Denmark have called for refugees and displaced persons to be granted asylum in the region around Afghanistan, not in Europe. Some countries expressed concern that the same mass influx of refugees could recur as in 2015, when many of them fled the conflict in Syria.

The survey, conducted from 27 to 31 August, listens to 2017 German residents aged 18 and over.
