Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
President United States of America, Joe Biden, ordered the release of classified documents related to the investigations of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for the terror tragedy 9 September 2001 alias 9/11.
“Today, I signed an executive order requesting the Ministry of Justice and other relevant agencies to monitor the declassification of documents related to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s investigation into the events of September 11,” Biden said in a statement quoted. AFP, Friday (3/9).
Biden stressed that the release of these classified documents should be completed within the next six months.
“We must not forget the endless grief of the families and loved ones of the 2,977 innocent people killed in the worst terrorist attack in America in our history,” Biden said.
However, Biden acknowledged there is a possibility that some material is still too sensitive to be released. He also advised the US to release as many documents as it deems safe to be disclosed.
“It’s very important to ensure the US government maximizes transparency, unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise,” Biden said.
Biden signed the order ahead of the two-decade anniversary of the terror attacks that killed thousands in the US on September 9, 2001.
Since the incident, the victim’s family has continued to call for the dismantling of documents resulting from the FBI’s investigation. However, the US has only released some, while others are still secret until now.
Shortly after the incident, the US launched an offensive against the Taliban in Afghanistan, which is believed to be protecting the mastermind behind 9/11, namely Osama bin Laden, the leader of the al-Qaeda network.
The US only officially stopped the invasion earlier this week. The US invasion of Afghanistan became Uncle Sam’s longest war in the country.
