New York from the perspective of a Venezuelan cartoonist

The main goal of most plastic artists is to get their works to well-known galleries. Jorge Torrealba had just moved to New York when he donated a painting for a charity event, without imagining that a month later he would be in those same facilities exhibiting his works for the first time.

“The painting was large and when they saw it they loved it and when the event ended they called me and asked myself: what did I break? What did I damage in the gallery? because I thought I didn’t deserve it. Imagine! So, the moment they told me, the emotion was so great that I couldn’t believe it, I still don’t believe it, “said the Venezuelan cartoonist at the opening of his exhibition.

Torrealba not only had to put his talent to the test before a new audience, but also the great challenge of creating twenty works in just one month, to be able to fill the spaces of the “One Art Space” gallery located in the heart of Manhattan.

Everything has to do with New York and also that fusion between the city, its icons and the animals “

What was not a problem for the artist was to create a concept and name his exhibition, which he called ‘Discount for ugly‘, the same name with which he became known at the events where he drew cartoons of adults and children in Miami, when he first arrived as an immigrant from Venezuela.

Torrealba explains that the essence of his works in this exhibition were framed in making the popular city that never sleeps, from a caricatured vision with the mixture of some elements, which predominate in most of his works such as bright colors, marked lines, animals and faces.

“Everything has to do with New York and also that fusion between the city, its icons and the animals. And a whole concept of portrait and nothing exact, with caricature, but adding the technique of acrylic and painting, being this new in my work, I also placed details in 3D and that gives a better perspective to the works ”. This is how the cartoonist explains the creation of his pieces.

After this experience, Torrealba seeks to continue making his works known in the United States, transferring the same concept to other cities, pointing his brushes as the next stop in the capital, Washington DC

Jorge Torrealba, also known as “Niño”, was born in Punto Fijo, Falcón, Venezuela. She is 29 years old and her story of inspiration motivated a production company to make a documentary, which was awarded an Emmy award.
