The Mu variant spans Peru
The country has registered 86 cases of the Mu variant of COVID-19 in 14 regions of Peru, although the predominant one in the country is still Gamma.
The infectologist of the National Institute of Health, Lely Solari, has explained that the variant Mu is not having “significant” growth, since the predominant one is Gamma, followed by Lambda and Delta.
“It is a variant that is present in 39 countries and we observe carefully since has participated in the appearance of the second wave in Colombia“, has added.
The first case of the Mu variant occurred on May 12 in the southern region of Moquegua and reached a peak of 37 cases last July.
“So far, nor there are studies that determine that the variant is more transmissible or that it generates more severe disease “, Solari has pointed out.
However, he has highlighted that “this variant presents immunological escape to the neutralizing antibodies of the virus, that is, people who have already been exposed to the virus or even vaccinated, can present the infection, but none reaches severe illness “.
Until now, a person has died, of the 198,420 deaths from the pandemic in Peru, by variant Mu, but this victim had not received any doses of the vaccines available in the country.
In Peru, a total of 10,721,005 people received the first dose, while 8,439,644 people already have the complete vaccination schedule.
