China Supply 1 Billion Corona Vaccines to the World But Difficulty Injecting Its Citizens

Jakarta

China has given 1 billion doses COVID-19 vaccine for many countries around the world, and could meet the promise of 2 billion doses to be delivered immediately. But even with this large supply, China is still having trouble vaccinating its people.

Zheng Zhongwei, director of the NHC Medical Science and Technology Development Center, said Friday that China’s vaccine production capacity is about 5 billion doses per year, which can guarantee domestic inoculation needs and global demand.

Even though China has delivered 2.01 billion doses domestically and is the world’s tallest country, it still faces challenges in its vaccination program.

On one occasion, Zhongwei said China would continue to intensify its vaccination program, especially with the highly contagious Delta variant.

“Recently, when (increasing vaccination) got to the next stage, it became more and more difficult,” Zheng said at a health forum. Reuters, Saturday (4/9/2021).

He said China had given the full dose to some 900 million people, or more than 60 percent of its 1.4 billion population. It’s just that experts think it takes 80 percent of the population to be vaccinated to establish herd immunity, which means China will have to inject 1.1 billion citizens.

By the end of October, the country is expected to finish administering two doses to 1.1 billion people as well as administering booster injections to limited groups such as the elderly and high-risk employees, Zheng estimates.

President Xi Jinping said that China would seek to provide 2 billion doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to other countries by the end of 2021.
