Greek police patrolling the northeastern land border with Turkey have found a migrant with a gunshot wound to his leg who is believed to have crossed into Greece illegally, authorities said.
Police say the migrant, a 25-year-old Syrian, used a plastic boat to cross a river that crosses the border. He received a gunshot wound to the thigh and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said.
It is not clear who shot him.
Greece has stepped up border guards, both on land and at sea. Especially after the Taliban’s conquest of Afghanistan, the government has made it clear that it wants to avoid a repeat of the 2015 migrant crisis, when more than one million people entered Europe, most of them through the Greek islands, to seek refuge in northern European countries.
