“I’m fully vaccinated, it must be a common cold” isn’t the best strategy to keep the realm of freedom open.’ That’s what Trends editor Stijn Fockedey says.
Hi, I’m Steven. I am fully vaccinated and healthy, yet I have been suffering from covid-19 for a few days, passed on from another vaccinated person. The delta variant can apparently sneak past the full vaccination defense several times in a row. Otherwise, the vaccines are still doing a fantastic job. None of the cluster I’m part of has gotten seriously ill, so it’s more or less limited to practical misery. But my infection and that of at least four others could have been avoided.
Last week, someone close to me tested positive on a self-test after feeling really sick and having Covid symptoms. We immediately quarantined the entire bubble. The subsequent PCR tests gave some hope that it would remain with that one contamination. But six days later I became ill and it turned out that I also tested ‘strong positive’. I am fully vaccinated. As a result, it remains for the time being with being completely off the map for a day and then a lingering cold, mild headache, fatigue and concentration problems.
I am part of a cluster of at least five confirmed infections, including unvaccinated young children, that are one source back. I was infected by someone who two weeks ago sat at the table with someone who had been struggling with a cold for a while. But he didn’t get tested – positive – until ‘my instigator’ tested positive. Foo foo foo. That will be paying the pies a few times at the following parties.
Message to the vaccinated who are going to work or party sick.
I would very much like this incident to degenerate as soon as possible into an anecdote at the festive table, which may or may not be laughed at uncomfortably. But we’re not that far yet. Everyone involved must continue to recover carefully. There is also some stress about whether there are other infections, perhaps also in people who, despite a full vaccination, can still end up in hospital due to their age or health condition. About fifteen people are in isolation or quarantine for at least a week, including my children. They are still too young for a vaccination. I have been impressed for a year and a half by how mature they deal with all the corona stress. I wanted to save them from missing the start of the school year and seeing their friends again.
My belief in a sustainable and rapid return to normal times has taken a knock. Everyone in our cluster may have been preyed upon by the delta variant. Apparently it can even break through the defenses of a double vaccinated and healthy person at least three times in a row. Again, none of the cluster ended up in the hospital, not even a lung patient. The vaccines work. They are a godsend.
I’m fully vaccinated, it must be a common cold” isn’t the best strategy for keeping the realm of freedom open.
But if that delta variant is so cunning everywhere, quite a few infections will still happen. The virus is passed on before the symptoms appear. And let’s not be naive either. The urge to ignore mild symptoms and forget about corona is in everyone. So I’m not a fan of all the bar hanging and dancing at ‘private parties’ in cafes at the moment, or of the rapid abolition of the mouth mask requirement in the workplace that the employers’ federation Voka is advocating.
My cluster will unfortunately not be the only one that could have been avoided with more vigilance and caution. Stay at home if you are sick or have mild symptoms and consult your doctor, even after a full vaccination. The coronavirus has given us very little margin to make mistakes for a year and a half and unfortunately that will remain so for a while.
