Cytokine storms have again become a fresh topic amidst the ongoing spread of COVID-19 in Indonesia, after Indonesian presenter and artist Deddy Corbuzier admitted experiencing it recently.
Deddy Corbuzier said he almost died from Covid-19, as well as experiencing a fairly powerful cytokine storm.
Lung Specialist Erlang Samoedro also confirmed that excessive cytokine storm activity can cause damaged organs and the patient’s condition to deteriorate quickly. Cytokines can also attack anyone, especially those who experience inflammation, due to the body has entered the virus or bacteria.
“A cytokine storm comes out when we are exposed to an infection, it is an inflammatory process, as part of the body’s response to threats. The threat is for example Covid-19 or bacteria, viruses,” he said in the Katadata Forum Virtual Series ‘What is a Cytokine Storm and what are the symptoms?’ , Friday (3/9).
He said, in the case of Covid-19, if a cytokine storm comes out, the organs that are generally damaged are the lungs. However, in addition to the lungs, it can also attack the kidneys to thicken the blood and of course increase the risk of death.
“Under normal conditions, cytokines can be high, let alone comorbidities. It’s normal that there is already inflammation that causes its own pain. Moreover, if you add another pain, it can automatically increase inflammation. Higher inflammation can cause death,” he said.
Erlang also explained that the therapy and treatment of patients with cytokine storms is still under research. There is no medicine that can be considered to cure a disease 100%.
However, he continued, doctors will generally provide treatment according to the symptoms that arise. And can also provide antiviral and anti-inflammatory drugs.
“Medicines are available, but we can’t guarantee 100%, because it all comes back to the body’s response. So far, drugs have been supportive, only helping, but there is no 100% cure yet,” said Erlang.
He advised the public to immediately want to be vaccinated. He considered, with the vaccine, the body will start working to introduce the immune system to the corona virus.
According to him, being vaccinated does not prevent a person from getting infected with Covid-19, but it can equip the body to be able to fight off viral infections in the future.
