The Story of Indonesia’s First Female Astronomer Immortalized in an Asteroid

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Head of Observatory Bosscha Bosch Bosch, Premana W Premadi, became the first female astronomer in Indonesia whose name was immortalized as the name of an asteroid in outer space.

The name Premana is attached to the asteroid discovered by CJ van Houten, Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld, and Tom Gehrels, on September 24, 1964.

Premana was blunt the reason why his name was picked to be the name of the asteroid, namely 12937 Premadi. He explained that the award was due to his contribution as an educator in the world of astronomy, as well as taking part as a researcher in the field of cosmology.

“This award is given because of my contribution as an educator in the world of astronomy, then as a researcher in the field of cosmology. Maybe the main thing is to make astronomy something that can be of interest, enjoyed by more people,” said Premana to CNNIndonesia.com, Thursday ( 2/9).

Premana’s name is increasingly famous in the field of world astronomy, because he is actively studying astronomy until he was given the throne to become Head of the Bosscha Observatory, Lembang, since 2018.

He said the interesting thing about astronomy is its universal nature, that is, everyone can observe distant celestial objects without differences in perspective.

Happy to teach astronomy to children

The woman who is fondly called Nana is also active in establishing the Universe Awareness for Children (Unawe) organization in 2007. She calls the organization a place for children to get to know astronomy from an early age.

He said he was active in the organization because of his interest in children. Because, according to him, young children in general are not bothered by various biases. In general, young children do not feel different from others, and are supported by a high sense of curiosity.

“So children can tell stories about the Moon and the Sun. Children here, children on other continents will see the same phenomenon,” he said.

In his organization, he admits that he does not teach science completely. Rather, it invites children to observe, enjoy and make them aware that the celestial objects they see are of value.

“From there they realized that ‘yes, yes, it’s also fun to see the stars’,” he said.

However, currently not all places can enjoy the view of the Milky Way. As in big cities, for example Jakarta, currently there is too much light pollution and air pollution. So it is not easy to see the space scene.
