“The United States and Afghanistan had pushed for that release so that negotiations could be started with Baradar,” correspondent Aletta André said. “Baradar is a true political leader, not a military leader.”
Baradar has always said he wants peace in Afghanistan. “But whether he is also moderate in the area of what, for example, women are allowed to, is really another question,” says André.
Fighting in Panjshir Valley
The new Afghan government will have to immediately focus on rebuilding the country: the fighting in Afghanistan has killed at least 240,000 people in recent years and the economy has collapsed.
Meanwhile, in the Panjshir Valley still fiercely resisted Taliban rule. It is the only region in Afghanistan that is not yet in the hands of the Taliban. There is only one real access road to the valley and it is guarded by heavily armed resistance fighters.
