The foothills of Hurricane “Ida” claimed at least nine people dead in New York.
Mayor de Blasio spoke of a “historic storm”, and for the first time in the history of the city a “flood emergency” had been declared. According to the National Weather Service, more rain fell in one hour than it had ever been since records began. In New York streets and subways were under water. Several thousand households are without electricity. Newark Airport also ceased operations. There were also several deaths in other areas on the east coast.
Over the weekend, the hurricane wreaked havoc in the states of Louisiana and Mississippi.
