Japan Finds Stainless Steel Particles in Moderna Vaccines

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Ministry of Health Japan said that the contamination found in the Covid-19 vaccine Modern whose use is suspended are particles stainless steel or stainless steel.

The findings are the result of an investigation by local distributor Takeda Pharmaceutical Co.

The Japanese Ministry of Health then hopes that it does not pose any additional health risks.

“Stainless steel is routinely used in heart valves, joint replacements, as well as metal sutures and staples. Thus, it is not expected that the injection of the particles identified in these injections will result in an increased medical risk in Japan,” Takeda and Moderna said in a joint statement Wednesday. (1/9), as quoted Reuters.

Japan suspended the use of 1.63 million doses of Moderna’s vaccine last week after being alerted to metal contamination in some vials of the vaccine.

The contaminated vaccine batch came from Spain, produced by the company Rovi.

The government’s suspension of vaccines seems to have hampered the inoculation process.

The minister in charge of the inoculation campaign, Taro Kono, said he wanted to speed up deliveries to cities that had stopped ordering due to a shortage of vaccine doses.

The government, Kono continued, is also considering when and how to give booster injections that may be needed to maintain immunity against the virus.

But now, the focus of the Japanese government is to inject two doses of the entire population of the vaccine.

This contamination issue came to the spotlight after two Japanese nationals died after receiving injections of the Moderna vaccine, which is believed to be contaminated with metal particles.

One resident who died was a man in his 30s. According to a statement from the Japanese Ministry of Health, he died a few days after receiving the second dose of the Moderna vaccine.

The cause of death in both cases is still being investigated. Takeda said there was no evidence the deaths were caused by the vaccine.

“That relationship is currently considered coincidental,” the company said in a statement.
