What did you miss?

The Texas Legislature has a controversial electoral law passedmaking voting more difficult. From now on, stricter rules apply to postal voting, polling stations may no longer be open 24 hours and voting from the car is prohibited.

Republicans say they want to prevent vote fraud, but Democrats and civil rights activists think the rules are mainly being introduced to make it more difficult for Democratic supporters. For example, black voters often cannot meet the stricter identification rules.

In seventeen other states, after unfounded allegations of blockade fraud by former President Trump, the electoral law was also amended at the initiative of his party colleagues.

Other news from the night:

  • Curfew in dark New Orleans after Hurricane Ida: The mayor of New Orleans has imposed a curfew for at least one night to curb crime after Hurricane Ida. The American city is still without power due to the storm and is therefore unlit. The hurricane killed at least four people, but the governor expects the number to rise.
  • Almere deletes job title ‘editor-in-chief’ after criticism from journalistic quarter: The Municipality of Almere has decided not to use the job title ‘editor-in-chief’ for the manager of a communication team. The Dutch Association of Editors in Chief had asked Almere to delete the journalistic title, because it would be confusing if it is used by a government agency.
  • Biden: ‘It was either leaving Afghanistan or escalating’: In a speech from the White House, President Biden once again defended his decision to leave Afghanistan. He pointed out that the Taliban had established a firm foothold in the country. “The choice was simple: honor the promises made by the Trump administration, or send thousands of new soldiers and start the war again.”

And then this:

Did the summer feel wetter and colder than usual? Statistically, that’s not true, we just got spoiled by three extraordinarily warm summers in a row, meteorologists say. “If we look at the temperatures of the past thirty years, this summer has really just been an average Dutch summer”, NOS weatherwoman Willemijn Hoebert says on the last day of the season.

July and August were less sunny than usual, with 620 hours of sunshine compared to 640 on average. According to Hoebert, the holiday months were therefore more gloomy than usual. The fact that the summer temperature was above average is because a warmer June was never measured before than this year, which made up for the delay.
