Tottenham have agreed to a € 30 million (£ 25.7) fee to sign Emerson Royal from Barcelona while Nuno Espírito Santo tries to beef up his defensive options.
Arsenal also reportedly showed interest in signing Emerson, who joined Barcelona in 2019 from Atlético Mineiro, but Spurs moved quickly to negotiate a deal for the 22-year-old.
With Ivory Coast defender Serge Aurier now in disgrace at Tottenham, Japhet Tanganga started as a right-back in the win against Watford on Sunday. Emerson will provide competition for himself and Matt Doherty, who played with Nuno at Wolves.
The four-time Brazilian international has spent the past two years on loan at Real Betis, which he helped qualify for the Europa League last season with coach Manuel Pellegrini.
Tottenham have already struck a deal for highly-rated 18-year-old Metz midfielder Pape Sarr and the Senegalese international is set to spend this season on loan at his former club. But the Spurs have yet to make a breakthrough in negotiations with the Wolves over Adama Traoré.
